These are 11 of my favorite pics from the past year (chronological order).  I’m really trying to learn all I can about photography and what it takes to nail things like exposure and focus, getting the right lighting and post processing. There is a lot to learn and in the pursuit of Super MWAC (mom with a camera), I’ve been disappointed, really disappointed with some of the pictures I’ve taken.  The lighting isn’t right, I can’t figure out what my settings should be, etc., and I would delete a picture or not even take it in the first place if the conditions weren’t right.  I was consumed!

It was after a special life event in our family that I discovered what was happening.  After I got home and looked at the pictures I had taken I realized that in my effort to make every picture perfect, I was missing some beautiful memories.   At  this point I understood that even though some pictures may not be worthy of great technical photographic praise, they still tell our family story….and I want that sweet story to be told, perfect picture or not!  I’ve learned to love family pictures for the subjects and not just their technical photographic merit.  I still want to build my photography skills and learn as much as I can and I know if I keep working, it will all “click” one day and great pictures will just be natural. Until then I’m going to try to remember that when it comes to my kids and hubby, not every picture has to be worthy of winning a photo contest…..it just has to tell the loving story of our family……

  1. I’ve been in the same place. I finally realized sometimes the photos I take are just snapshots and I’m okay with that. Even my snapshots now are better than they were before classes. You’re photos and family are beautiful. That last shot is amazing! I hope you print it on canvas and put it out every Christmas. Blessings to you!

  2. Kristen, I celebrate you and your words to start your post. I am was right there with you and I have stopped and started taken photos on auto again when I don’t want to worry about missing something important. I had to realize I was not trying to become a professional photographer 100% only trying to learn more about a hobby I love.

Gorgeous kids and you go girl for having such a big family! They look like they are having a blast.
